Do nutritional supplements work?
Over the past decade a number of landmark studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, The National Eye Institute and the National Science Foundation as well as numerous other privately funded clinical trials have proven the significant role nutritional supplements play in maintaining our health. The use of certain supplements in appropriate formulations and dosages have been shown to reduce the risk, slow the progression or, in some instances, even reverse the effects of serious health conditions such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, and age-related macular degeneration1.
Who should take nutritional supplements?
Over 150 million Americans of all ages take nutritional supplements daily, however many don’t always get the benefits they expect. Each year millions of people who purchase “off the shelf” supplements without obtaining the advice of a qualified healthcare professional, take products containing improper ingredient combinations, incorrect dosages or products manufactured under substandard conditions. Taking the wrong supplement can lead to illness or aggravate an existing condition and thousands of people experience serious side-effects and illness as a result. Others experience the same consequences by mixing off-the-shelf vitamin and herbal solutions with their physician-prescribed medications.
Recent and numerous nationally publicized investigations have suggested that anyone who purchases off-the-shelf supplements runs a substantial risk of getting products that don’t contain the ingredients printed on their labels, contain additional potentially-harmful contaminants, or both.

How can safety and effectiveness be determined when choosing a product?
Claims of product safety and effectiveness made by manufacturers and distributors are difficult to evaluate because, unlike the pharmaceutical industry, no government agency is authorized evaluate claims, test to determine a product’s safety and effectiveness or inspect manufacturing facilities unless and until a product is suspected of causing harm to consumers.
All AmeriSciences® nutritional supplements are manufactured in America at FDA-licensed facilities, using self-imposed standards patterned after the standards the FDA requires of the pharmaceutical industry. Although the FDA has not reviewed these claims, practices and procedures, scientists at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and 14 universities have as part of a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation leading the the selection of AmeriSciences® to conduct joint research leading to the creation of nutritional supplements for use by America’s Astronaut Corps.
Other nutritional supplements are not required to meet pharmaceutical standards by law and, in fact, the vast majority (99%) of the vitamins and other nutritional supplements available in drugstores, health food and nutrition stores, supermarkets and on the internet do not meet the self-imposed AmeriSciences® standards.
